A recent study has found that Brits, who do their shopping online, have saved on average £27,000 since the turn of the millennium. Saving money on the likes of holidays, clothes, insurance and electronics, the computer-smart public will have even more to spend online in future. There is also good news for people who have only just started shopping on the internet, as online savings are expected to increase.

The survey, conducted by an Internet insurance firm, stated that we spend £2,700 less a year since the internet became a way to shop. The poll, consisting of 3,000 shoppers, also shows that the biggest savings are being made on the weekly food shop, which on average, has gone down from £72 spent in store to £49 online, saving people £11,560 in ten years. A person buying a car online now spends £4,540, compared to £5,988 at a dealership in 2000.

The study also revealed that 62% now use the internet for the majority of their purchases and that 9 out of ten people believe they saved money by shopping online. Three quarters of the poll believe that the internet is the most convenient way to shop.

Cutting their spending by £3,000 over the past decade, fashion-conscious men and women have also been highly beneficial from the growth of online retail. With constant online offers and discounts along with convenience and time-saving, internet shopping has never been so appealing.

Brian Martin, managing director of the online insurance company, said: "With such hectic schedules, it's no wonder Brits find the accessibility of the internet a godsend. And the figures really are incredible."

Car, home, travel and pet insurance can also be cheaper online as comparison websites have made market prices more competitive, saving just under £130 a year for the average Brit. According to the research, saving will continue to grow as more comparison websites are being introduced.

Travel websites have pushed the average amount paid for a package holiday down from £930 to £772, whilst online courier comparison websites such as myParcelDelivery.com, who work with leading couriers and allow customers to compare prices, also help save money for you, the consumer, as companies battle for online sales.
